Munich Day 8

That morning I was awoken by something I honestly thought was a very large toddler music class right outside my window. Of course at six in the morning it wasn’t, but it was something even stranger. A large parade of cows (with the very large bells) being lead down main street… apparently they go into town to be milked. I will say this is the only time I’ve been startled awake before nine and was laughing just seconds later. Then we got back on the bus to Munich.

We arrived in Munich and checked into the Hotel Torbräu. We went out on the Munich city walk and visited Asam’s Church which was incredible! It’s free and fast and not too out of the way, would highly recommend! Then we saw the glockenspiel, which was neat, and walked around the shops. We ended our day with dinner at the beer garden by our hotel, which was fun and delicious!

When we ride on the bus we stop every two hours or so at an Autogrill, which is Europe’s version of a rest stop. They usually have a restaurant of some sort (some good, some not), a bathroom (some free, some not), and a convenience store. Oh, and free WiFi. They are a nice quick stop, they are very easy to figure out, and pretty clean.

Munich Day 9

We headed right out to Dachau. You take a train to a bus that’s really easy to figure out and then get your maps and audio guides and walk up to the gate. Now I decided not to bring my camera with me and none of us took many pictures, we all wanted to just take it in. We decided to go at our own paces and meet up at a certain time. It was incredibly powerful and well done.

We got back to the main train station and split up. My mom and I headed to the Alte Pinakothek (Munich’s art museum) and the guys went to the BMW museum. I was incredibly excited. The Alte Pinakothek houses my all time favorite painting. Albrecht Altdorfer’s Battle of Issus. We arrived and found that the museum was very much under construction and only about a fourth of it was open… Luckily they relocated the most famous pieces to the small portion that was available to the public and so we still got to see those. It was a nice museum and very quiet. I’m sure it will be much nicer once it fully opens again.

We met back up and headed to the Augustiner Keller biergarten for dinner. Here we talked about our visit in Munich and decided that it was not our favorite.  We just aren’t big city people, we like that old, homey feel that we felt in all the other cities. Munich to us just felt like a big, loud mall. If I ever go back, I’ll use Munich as a base camp and take day trips.  That night we all packed a backpack for Venice. Jody said it is really not fun to bring all your luggage into the city, so we all just packed the absolute essentials, which totally paid off.

I read the plaques, looked at the pictures, and watched the videos. They were all very informative and worth my time. Then I walked through everything, just trying to imagine. We left feeling very centered, it was definitely something that we needed to see, but it may not be right for everyone.
